What does a dog need to know for CGC?

How much does the CGC test cost?
CGC Testing Each CGC test is $20 In addition, the American Kennel Club will charge $20 to process your test form and provide a final certificate.
What does CGC after a dog’s name mean?
On January 1, 2013 Canine Good Citizen ® became an official AKC title that can appear on the title records of dogs registered or listed with AKC. Dog owners who complete the CGC as a Title process may list the suffix “CGC” after the dog’s name.

Is it hard to pass the CGC test?
Completing and passing the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test is difficult for both dog and pet owner To pass the CGC test, you have to do all 10 steps completely successfully. The three most difficult steps are Sitting Politely For Petting, Reaction To Another Dog and the dreaded Supervised Separation.
How long does the CGC test take?
The CGC test generally lasts less than 10 minutes and usually happens in a relatively controlled environment, like a sectioned off area of a pet store or show ring at your AKC trainer’s school. Find out more about the CGC Test in our Participant Guide.
Can you use treats during Canine Good Citizen test?
You are allowed to speak to your dog during this course, so use this to your advantage to keep your dog focused and on task. No training tools like treats or training collars can be used on the exam , so your dog will need to be able to walk in a regular harness or collar.
How old does a dog have to be to take the CGC test?
Though not a requirement for testing, many owners find that their pup needs some formal training in order to prepare for the CGC test. There is no
age requirement
for the Canine Good Citizen program.
How do you get CGC certified?
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Have at least 2 years of experience working with owners and their dogs.
- Have experience working with a variety of breeds and sizes of dogs.
- Must not be currently suspended from AKC privileges.
How many CGC titles are there?
There are a total of 3 Canine Good Citizen titles that asses your dog’s
basic obedience
. Any dog of any age can take the tests to get the titles – Some handlers choose to test their dogs as a way of checking in on progress, and the test may be taken again at a later date if the dog does not pass.
What is on the CGC test?
This test demonstrates that the dog can behave politely around other dogs Two handlers and their dogs approach each other from a distance of about 20 feet, stop, shake hands and exchange pleasantries, and continue on for about 10 feet. The dogs should show no more than casual interest in each other.

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is an exciting new program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is an incentive program for loving dog owners who have taken the time to take their puppies through a basic training class.
Can you use a clicker in the CGC test?
Food or treats, clickers, toys, and corrective collars are not allowed to be used during the test A dog that growls, snaps, or bites (directed towards another dog or a human) at any time will be dismissed from the test.
Can you use a prong collar during a CGC test?
Elements of the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test Owners are permitted to use praise and encouragement during testing, but toys and treats are not allowed. Also prohibited are special training collars, such as choke chains, prong collars and head halters A standard buckle collar and regular leash are all that is permitted.
Can a CGC evaluator test their own dog?
Canine Good Citizen Evaluators should avoid any situations that appear to be a conflict of interest. Evaluators may not test dogs they own in the CGC test.
Can you use gentle leader for CGC test?
Retractable leashes may not be used in the CGC Test. Dogs should wear a well-fitting buckle or slip collar (including a martingale) made of leather, fabric or chain. Special training equipment such as harnesses or haltis, pinch collars, and head collars such as gentle leaders are not permitted.
